How to Perform an Advanced Search on Craigslist using List-Alert

   by John

List-Alert has a variety of options that you can use to perform more complex searches on Craigslist. This post explains how to perform searches for phrases, exclusions, or statements and either statements.

Search for a Phrase on Craigslist
Search that Excludes Terms on Craigslist
Search for Item A or Item B or both on Craigslist
Search for Item A and either Item B or Item C
Combining Search Terms
Does Capitalizing Words Matter when Searching Craigslist?

Search for a Phrase on Craigslist

For instance if you are looking for a car that has “low miles” then you need to enclose the term in quotation marks. Otherwise the search looks for the words low and miles in the posting. Without the quotes the search results might include a post that says “Low price car with very high miles”.

"low miles”

Finds posts that contain the term 'low' followed by word 'miles'.

Search that Excludes Terms on Craigslist

If you are looking for a Scion xB that is not black then enter the search and place a negative sign immediately in front of the word black.

Scion xB -black

Finds posts for a Scion xB that is not black.

If you wanted a Scion that was not black or red then enter both colors with a negative sign in front of each word.

Scion xB –black –red

Finds posts that contain terms Scion and xb but not the words black or red.

Search for Item A or Item B or both on Craigslist

If you want to search for posting that either contains Toyota or Lexus or both terms (as opposed to only both terms) you can use a "pipe" character '|' between the terms.

Toyota | Lexus

Finds posts with the word Toyota or Lexus or both terms.

You can also do a search with multiple or statements.

Toyoya | Lexus | Scion

Finds post with either Toyota or Lexus or Scion or a combination of those terms.

Search for Item A and either Item B or Item C

You can also create searches where you search for one term plus either, or both, of two other search terms. So you can do a search that looks for a 2000 model year car that can either be a Toyota or a Lexus by inserting the either terms in parenthesis.

2000 (Toyota | Lexus)

This search finds posts that include 2000 and either Toyota or Lexus or both car types.

Combining Search Terms

You can perform a search that combines all of the above tools into a single search.

2000 “low miles” (Toyota | Lexus | Scion) -black – red

This finds postings for 2000 Toyota, Lexus and Scion’s that are not red or black and have the phrase “low miles”.

Does Capitalizing Words Matter when Searching Craigslist?

Like most search engines it does not matter if you capitalize terms when searching Craigslist.
